Planting Palm Trees

Palm trees need an ample supply of water; to prevent overwatering, install a drip system with an automatic timer.

Use a light, porous soil mixture that drains well for optimal palm growth. They are generally adaptable to different kinds of soil as long as there is adequate drainage.

Prepare the Site

Palms thrive best in well-drained soil with a loose texture. A potting mix containing lightweight elements such as peat, vermiculite and perlite can help improve porosity of the soil, making it easier for roots to absorb moisture and nutrients from it.

Planting a palm tree in its ideal conditions is essential to its success and can prevent transplant shock, cold temperatures or lack of sunlight from damaging it further and making it more susceptible to pathogens.

Before planting, a temporary dam should be constructed around the root ball to direct water directly into it and spread on top. Next, 3 to 4 inch mulch should cover its roots to help retain humidity and prevent weed growth.

Dig the Hole

As palms can be quite large, planting them can be difficult. Specialized machinery is required to move these heavy specimens. Furthermore, it's crucial that a location allows for growth over time without interference from structures or utility lines.

Dig a hole that is at least twice the width of the root ball. Avoid exposing any roots as this could result in transplant shock; if necessary, only expose a small section of topsoil.

To lighten the soil, mix 1/3 sand with the native soil dug from your hole to help the roots penetrate more readily. Prior to planting, water the site and backfill with an enriched mixture such as compost or manure to eliminate air pockets and firm it firmly before irrigation begins. It's also wise to mulch around the new tree as its growth occurs – both will keep moisture locked into its root system while simultaneously blocking out weeds!

Place the Palm

Palm trees can be relatively easy to care for once properly planted, and with just a bit of upfront work you could enjoy decades of uncomplicated growth.

Palm trees thrive best in sandy soil with excellent drainage. Before planting, perform a quick drainage test by digging a hole and filling it with water; if the excess liquid drains away within 12 hours, your site likely has good drainage.

Planting palms early in their growing seasons ensures they have enough time to develop an extensive root system before dormancy, protecting against potential cold damage.

Before transplanting a palm, be sure to gradually adjust it to its new environment before taking out of its container. Otherwise, shock may occur upon relocation and it might not adapt quickly enough to different light, shade and temperatures.

When taking out a palm from its container, use care when extracting it to avoid damage to its roots. Although pulling may take some force, once in place backfill the hole with soil tamping down each layer with your foot to avoid air pockets forming in between layers.

Care After Planting

Palms require frequent watering in order to keep their soil moist but not saturated, with newly planted palms needing daily attention for at least the first week and thereafter every other day, then three times weekly after roots have taken hold. A moat of soil around their base may help maximize water absorption.

Palm roots thrive in soils rich in sand that drain well, to maximize success with your palm, mix a mixture of soil mix and soil with heavy additions of sand into your planting hole mix. Also score its sides to promote root growth before applying an all-purpose fertilizer specially tailored for palms, cacti and citrus plants.

Take care when removing dead or diseased leaves to avoid damaging their roots. Sometimes the leaf base will fall off on its own; in other cases it may be necessary to use a pole saw and manually pull out old leaves manually.
